Since my flight didn’t leave Phnom Penh until 11:55 PM, I spent my last day in the city exploring more sites. The Independence Monument was near the National Institute of Education, so I saw it every day I walked to the conference from my hotel. I don’t know if any pedestrian would be brave enough to cross the traffic circle to reach the base of the monument, but the best photographs are probably from a distance anyway.
As I walked to the National Museum, I passed the Cambodia Vietnam Monument and the Royal Palace. The palace grounds close from 11 to 2 each day, so I visited the museum first. The museum does not allow photos in the exhibit halls, but they do allow photography in the beautiful courtyard. The National Museum in Siem Reap is better arranged, but this one has more intact relics from the temples.
