Khmer Barbecue

After exploring the temples, I returned to Hotel Be to take a cold shower and cool off. The power went out shortly after I returned, and while it was back on in the tourist area within an hour or so, other areas remained without power for much longer.

Pich and Roy picked me up for dinner at 6:30 and took me to a local Khmer barbecue restaurant. Counting Roy and me, there were only three foreigners in the restaurant, but locals wandered in throughout the evening. Since the power was still out in that section of town, we ate – and cooked – by candlelight. The restaurant had a long buffet of food (~ 1/3 raw foods to grill, ~ 1/3 prepared salads, ~ 1/3 prepared rices and noodles), and even if there had been more light to see the food, nothing was labeled, so selecting food to barbecue was a culinary adventure. Once we selected our items, we cooked the raw food over hot charcoals at our table. The barbecue pot also has a basin of hot water to cook greens.

I still don’t know what all I ate, but I enjoyed everything, and it was a fun adventure.
